The Bull Roarer is a thin flat piece of wood hooked onto a piece of string at one end. If you spin it around it makes a loud and distinctive 'whirring' sound. Aboriginals believe this is the sound of the spirit. Aboriginal elders would often take the young boys out into the bush at night time and swing the Bull Roarer around them to make a sound to scare away the evil spirits. This would bring the good spirit into the boy so when he becomes a man he has good spirit within him.

This sound should not be recorded like it was in the Crocodile Dundee movies because some tribes are not allowed to hear the sound of the Bull Roarer. It is only meant to be used by certain Australian Aboriginal tribes.
